This is notably Tim Roth's breakthrough American film. In his native England, he had thrived under socialist directors like Mike Leigh and Alan Clarke but, as the British film industry shifted more in the line of Merchant-Ivory and upper-class costume dramas, those avenues were drying up for Roth. Hence, his move to the USA and his embracing of the American independent cinema, spearheaded by Le iene (1992).
