Dino De Laurentiis got first option at the film rights to the novel, because when he optioned Red Dragon, he anticipated Hannibal Lecter becoming a hit character, and worked that clause into the contract. Originally he had planned to work only with Universal Picture on this sequel, but in order to use certain elements from Il silenzio degli innocenti (1991), he had to deal in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which had bought the now-defunct Orion Pictures' catalog. MGM therefore owned the character Clarice Starling. De Laurentiis had to team with MGM again on the prequel Red Dragon (2002), because the location used for the exterior of Lecter's hospital no longer existed, and he had to use footage from The Silence of the Lambs for an establishing shot.
