Drastic as it may seem to have Earth populated by "just" half of what it is now (2020's), fact remains that one only has to go as far as to the 90's(!!) to find Earth's population in exactly that state, i.e. half of what it is now. To put this in a more direct context of the movies, this fact exposes just how fundamentally short-sighted Thanos's initial plan was, since he obviously overlooked the element of procreation completely. And, on a more poignant note, it also means that the last time Captain Marvel was on Earth, the population of humans was (more or less) the same as it is upon her return.
