Rod Temperton, who had written the lyrics to the video's song "Thriller", had added a 'talking section' that he intended to be narrated by a famous voice in the horror genre. Peggy Lipton, then-wife of producer Quincy Jones, knew Vincent Price and suggested him for the role. Price accepted and did the recording in two takes. He later divulged to Johnny Carson that he was offered a one-time fee of $20,000, or a percentage of the album proceeds. He had chosen the first offer, admitting that he had been quite foolish as 'Thriller' sold over 110 million copies world-wide.
