Nearly all of Burkittsville, Maryland (where the film takes place) was declared part of the Burkittsville Historic District in 1975, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The village contains many well-preserved buildings with Federal-style architecture from the early 19th century, and a few buildings with Victorian-style architecture.
