In a 2014 webisode of the YouTube channel Trailers from Hell, filmmaker Dan Ireland claimed that he had been told directly by Paul Verhoeven that 'Basic Instinct' (1992) is a remake of Verhoeven's own 'The Fourth Man (De vierde man)' (1983). Watching both films - and of course keeping in mind that Michael Douglas' Detective Nick Curran was original bisexual, but Douglas refused to perform the character as such - this makes perfect sense.
