The original script by Craig Titley was quite different from the final film, serving as an origin story about how the gang first met rather than a reunion story about the gang coming together again. It featured Professor Hyde-White and Old Hank from the first season of the original show, many references to other Hanna-Barbera properties (such as Josie and the Pussycats preforming at a party) and William Hanna and Joseph Barbera were intended to make cameos at the end. When Warner Bros. bought Turner Entertainment (who owned Hanna-Barbera) and replaced Titley with James Gunn who radically altered the script, though there are some similarities such as a love interest for Shaggy who unintentionally creates a rift between he and Scooby (though in the original script it was a goth girl named Kandy who shared Shaggy's passion for food), a higher stakes story involving a cult that turn people into monsters for an evil apocalyptic plot, and some crude humor. Other differences include having the Kingston Mansion featured in the show's intro having a large role in the first act, Scooby's collar being a relic of great significance, Fred living in the van that becomes the mystery machine because he used all his money to get into college and an evil dogcatcher out to kill Scooby.
