When Eddie (Bill Nunn) takes Deloris (Whoopi Goldberg) to the church, she asks him, "What am I gonna be? Quasimodo in the bell tower?" which is a reference to Victor Hugo's classic, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Mary Wickes (Sister Mary Lazarus) played a singing gargoyle in Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996).
