Many fans of the film series were upset that the trademark Albanians, who were expected to make a return in this film, did not serve as the antagonists. In the previous film, Murad Hoxha claimed that if Bryan killed him, then his other sons would seek revenge. This led many to believe that the villains in this film would be those Albanians, but they never appear. Instead, the villains in this film are a Russian gang out to get money from a crooked business deal gone wrong with Lenore's husband, Stuart St. John. Most people thought that the plot with the Russians came out of nowhere, but that's not true. In the first movie, Bryan comments on Stuart's involvement in an oil deal with "some Russians" that went south. The villains in this film were those Russians.
