Reaction from Toho Studios was mixed, with some executives attempting to salvage the film following the negative backlash. Many filmmakers noted while they didn't have anything against the movie, there was a sense of disappointment. Shûsuke Kaneko, director of Gojira, Mosura, Kingu Gidorâ: Daikaijû sôkôgeki (2001), mentioned "It is interesting the United States version runs about trying to escape missiles." Likewise Takao Okawara, director of Gojira ni-sen mireniamu (1999), stated that "The U.S. version was a bit hard to digest as the real Godzilla."Masaaki Tezuka, director of Gojira tai Megagirasu: Jî shômetsu sakusen (2000), Gojira X Mekagojira (2002) and Gojira tai Mosura tai Mekagojira: Tôkyô S.O.S. (2003), enjoyed it for what it was but felt it shouldn't have been called Godzilla since it had so little to do with the character.
