The film's non-release in China was unusual as the Chinese film board had no political issues with the film. It was akin to the Chinese rejection three years earlier of Deadpool (2016). The censors in China found the former film was too explicit for release and the American film studio (in this case Warner Bros) refused to submit an edited version for the Chinese market.
