The name "Avengers" was not chosen randomly. In 1995, after an adventure with Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, Fury began writing a proposal for a team of superheroes to protect the earth from hostile alien forces. He glanced at a photo of Danvers standing by her Pegasus plane and saw her callsign "Avenger" on the hull outside the cockpit. He then changed the original name of the initiate from "Protectors" to "Avengers".
