In this film, Batman considers that his relationship with Robin is family-like, as if he had a brother. In comics, Robin/Dick Grayson is Batman's legal ward and surrogate son. Most of the people who have used the Robin identity over the decades have been Batman's surrogate sons, adoptive sons, or (in one case) biological sons.
