In the original script, written by Tom Mankiewicz, crime boss Rupert Thorne hired Joe Chill to murder Thomas Wayne, because he was running against Thorne for city council. Eventually, Thomas Wayne's political career was incorporated into Joker (2019) and The Batman (2022).
