Many years after the release of the film, the estates of three of the producers who had since died - Carl Foreman, Sidney Cohn and Oliver Unger - along with surviving producer Peter Gettinger, sued Sony Pictures (the successor to Columbia Pictures) for unpaid sums from distribution rights. The case went to the N.Y. Supreme Court in 2008, where the plaintiffs were awarded more than 30 years of funds withheld by the studio. Sony appealed the decision, but it was upheld in 2009.
