In 2010, The Karate Kid (1984) was rebooted starring Jaden Smith as new character Dre Parker and Jackie Chan as his mentor, Mr. Han. The reboot had mixed reviews, making $18.8 million in its opening weekend and grossing $176.7 million in the US. In 2010 Columbia Pictures began developing a sequel. In April 2014, Breck Eisner was announced to direct and Smith and Chan were confirmed to return. On June 25th 2014, Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer were announced to write the sequel. The movie didn't get past early production stage, though in 2019 it was announced it was still in the works but the studio didn't yet know if Smith (who would no longer be a "kid" by the time they film it) will be brought back or if Chan will instead be teaching someone else like they did with The Next Karate Kid.
