This movie represents the reinvention of the 1970's disaster film. The formula is similar to that of the Airport films, where something renders the pilot incapacitated, leaving it up to one of the flight attendants to pilot and land the plane with the help of mission control. More specific disaster films with similar plotlines set on a bus and a train, respectively, are 1976's satirical The Big Bus and 1985's Runaway Train.
