The producer Jerry Wald initially imposed another ending that Nicholas Ray shot, an ending in which Robert Mitchum's character goes away with an ex-girlfriend of his, whilst Arthur Kennedy does the same with Susan Hayward. But after a while Wald accepted the original ending.
