An attempt to appeal to the "hepcat" audience who were adherents of jazz and blues music, this film was a box office bomb in its initial release at the end of 1941. Rather than admit they had made a mediocre musical overful with jive talk and melodramatic cliches, the Warner executives who had green-lighted this project blamed its failure on its having been released a mere three weeks before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
