After reading that Jaws 2 was experiencing problems finding a director, then 14-year-old Steven Soderbergh wrote a letter to Universal Studios pleading to direct the movie and stated he would do it for free. Universal producer Richard D. Zanuck read the letter when it came in the mail and found it amusing. Decades later, after Soderburgh had become a notable filmmaker, Zanuck actually met him at a festival and brought up the letter he wrote as a teenager, telling Steven Soderburgh "in hindsight, knowing how Jaws 2 turned out, I probably would've accepted your offer."
