According to the novel, Carter, along with his partner James K. Powell, found a gold-rich vein of quartz that, adjusted for inflation, produced some $16.5 million in gold over three months. Powell set out for civilization in order to procure mining equipment and men, with Carter following about an hour later. Encountering Apache tracks, he realized that Powell was in trouble. In the middle of the night he found a large Indian village, boldly rode in to rescue Powell and rode on into the darkness, bearing the body of his friend. He encountered a trail in the moonlight, which led him to the mysterious cave from which his Martian adventure begins.
