Production chief, Sherry Lansing's second feature with 20th Century Fox studios. Lansing reportedly loved the picture and thought it had a powerful anti-war message. According to her studio vice-chairman, Norman Levy had thought the movie was depressing and asked her to re-shoot the ending, in which the National Guard mows down the teenage protagonists. She refused, and Levy threatened to sell off half of Fox's interest in the movie if she did not relent. Fortunately, studio owner Marvin Davis agreed to make the decision. "We showed it to Marvin and he loved it," recalled Lansing-counterpart, Stanley R. Jaffe. Davis declared he wouldn't sell any of it.
