It took two hours for the make-up artists to change Jack Nicholson into the Joker. 355 silicone adhesive had to be used, due to Nicholson's allergy to spirit gum. Prosthetic make-up designer Nick Dudman used acrylic-based make-up paint, called "PAX", for Nicholson's chalk-white face. It was tricky finding the right shade of white, in contrast to the dark sets and lighting, since a pure white would blowout the brightness and flatten the contrast in Nicholson's face.
