The book that Johan read while his mother has sex in another room is the Russian novel "A Hero of Our Time". This is the same book which is being read by the actor's character in the intro to Persona (1966). In The Silence, Johan learns the words "hand", and "face". In Persona the sequence featuring the same actor puts greater emphasis on hands and faces. Also the scene is very similar to when Johan is rubbing his hand in the train window.
