Rorke's Drift was attacked by the Zulu reserve, specifically elements of the iNdluyengwe, uThulwana, iNdlondlo, and uDloko amabutho ("regiments") under the command of Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande. In theory, they mustered about 6,000 men. In practice, some of them had stayed to defend Zulu homes, or left during the skirmishes around Isandhlwana. About 3,500 men actually attacked the outpost. The fighters were older men in their late 30s and 40s, most carrying white shields to distinguish themselves in battle.
