Michael Bond originally intended for Paddington to be from darkest Africa, where, in the nineteenth and twentieth century European cultural imagination, all strange things come from. When informed by his editor that there have been no bears living in Africa since the days of the Roman Empire, he researched and found that there are bears living in Peru, and thus changed Paddington's point of origin to darkest Peru.
