Stanley Kubrick watched Breakfast Club (1985) four times and was really impressed by Anthony Michael Hall's performance. He compared Hall to a young Spencer Tracy. Kubrick wanted to cast him in the lead role of Pvt. Joker in his upcoming film Full Metal Jacket (1987), but after months of negotiations Hall turned down the offer. The part went to Matthew Modine.
