Although each sequel retcons certain aspects of the previous storyline, this sequel does it the most. Changes include: The explanation for the end of the world that Wesker gives in the previous film (the Umbrella-fueled global bio-weapons arms race where each nation wanted the T-Virus for themselves) is retconned and the explanation from the movies up until that one is partially restored (the winds and the airliners instead of the rats and the airliners spread the original Raccoon City infection).The ending of the last movie implying a big final showdown at the White House between the last of the survivors including Wesker and the heroes from the video games seen in the sequels before this one and the army of the undead is never fully addressed. The fate of Alice's allies from the previous film is also never fully addressed.Wesker is suddenly a villain once again and the Red Queen, who is once again modeled after a different child character (Dr. Marcus' daughter here and Dr. Ashford's daughter in the second film), is now Alice's ally.A different explanation from the one in the second movie is given about the identity of the T-Virus creator (In the second movie, Dr. Ashford created the T-Virus to help his ill daughter the Red Queen's avatar is based on, but in this movie it was Dr. Marcus who created the virus to help his own ill daughter the Red Queen's avatar is actually based on).It is implied that the Hive incident from the first film was not the first outbreak of the virus even though Umbrella seem to be unaware of the T-Virus' zombie-turning side effect in the first film.Although Wesker and Dr. Isaacs are enemies in previous movies, and Wesker was Isaacs' boss, they are now allies, and Wesker is Isaacs' henchman. The possibility that some of them may have been clones in previous films is the only explanation given.Alice herself is shown to be a clone but it is never explained why the T-virus was never tested on the original sickly Alice when it gave such supernatural abilities to her clones.The laser grid defense in the room adjacent to the Red Queen's CPU room never uses the inescapable laser pattern that killed half of the recon team in the original movie.
