This movie bears a stark contrast to its slasher brethren like Halloween and Friday the 13th which always portray a group of teenagers being terrorized while cut off from any adults and authority figures. Here the parents are very much part of the story. Also, on the suggestion of writer/director Wes Craven's daughter, who was annoyed that the women in his previous movie Il mostro della palude (1982) trip and fall all the time while being chased, Craven made the heroine much less vulnerable and clumsy.
