This movie's plot is an inversion of the plots of the first three movies. In the first three Terminator films, a cyborg is sent back to the past to kill John Connor (or kill his mother, thereby killing him). In this film, a human being with robotic implants wakes up in the future and is unwittingly part of a ploy to kill John Connor, though he ultimately saves Connor instead. Skynet has reversed its plan, sending a human being into the future, instead of a machine into the past. The unspoken notion is that during Judgment Day, Skynet had access to all digital sources of information, and pieced together that it had previously sent its machines back in time to kill John Connor. One could argue that Skynet has learned from its previous mistakes and now recognizes that only a human being can understand and earn the trust of another human being. However, Marcus's sense of humanity is what prevents him from carrying out Skynet's plan; Skynet still lacked the imagination to foresee this.
