Each time The Wraith kills one of the gang members, a mysterious arm or leg brace is shown vanishing. This was meant to signify The Wraith getting stronger with each realized act of revenge. The scenes confused audiences because it's not really obvious as you watch the film, but it was confirmed by director Mike Marvin in interviews.
