Roger Waters originally conceived the film as a starring vehicle for himself. One theory as to why it didn't work out that way is that his lackluster screen test led to the casting of, coincidentally, another musician with no prior acting experience, Bob Geldof. On the other hand, in the DVD special features, Alan Parker states his opinion that Waters was too close to the material to do it properly.
