In his portrayal of Palpatine, Ian McDiarmid is the only actor ever to have played a character older than he was in his first portrayal (in Il ritorno dello Jedi (1983)), then his character's younger self when he himself was older (in the prequel trilogy), and finally in this film he plays a much older version of his character now that he is also older.
