This movie marks Denis Lawson's first on-screen appearance as Wedge Antilles since Il ritorno dello Jedi (1983). He provided the voice of the character in the video game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II - Rogue Leader (2001). He was previously asked to reprise the character in Star Wars - Il risveglio della Forza (2015), which he turned down, allegedly saying in an interview that it would've bored him. However, in a later interview, he said that he would've loved to reprise his part for that film, but had to decline, as he was working on another project at the time. In October 2019, a leaked image from the novel "Resistance Reborn", which takes place before "The Rise of Skywalker", clearly showed Wedge, which sparked rumors that he may return. Lawson's representative soon confirmed that this was the case.
