Producer Oliver A. Unger once said of the long gap in time between the release of I cannoni di Navarone (1961) and the making of this picture: "'Navarone' has had tremendously 'long legs'. It's kept doing the rounds of the cinemas all over the world, and it's also been tremendously popular on television. I think the feeling of all concerned has been - why kill the goose that kept laying such golden box office eggs?".
