The young actors were forbidden from going out on the town while filming, so as to preserve the image of innocence to the public. Franco Zeffirelli in fact had an agreement with local journalists that any photos of the actors on nights out be brought to him before going to the papers. One night near the end of the shoot, John McEnery, Bruce Robinson, and Olivia Hussey rebelled by taking a scooter from the set and going out on the town.
