Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper wanted virtually unknown actors to play the Freelings because they wanted to add a realism to the family that would off-balance the ghost story. They felt that if the audience watched well-known stars, then it would take away from the realistic feel of the characters. Atleast that's what they've said in interviews since the release of the movie. Although this explanation from Spielberg might be a post defacto excuse to explain why they couldn't ensnare any big name talents in Hollywood to star in this. Because as a matter of fact, superstar Shirley Maclaine was approached by them to play Diane Freeling, and she turned them down because she said she "objected to the terrorization of children". And she is not an unknown.
