In creating the look of the Joker, Jared Leto was inspired heavily by David Bowie, specifically by his "Thin White Duke" persona. He also spoke with Grant Morrison, a famed DC writer who has often written the Joker as resembling the rock star. Morrison has even given him Bowie's trademark dilated pupil.
