Kate Winslet auditioned for the role of Elizabeth in this movie. Helena Bonham Carter was selected for the role, but Director Sir Kenneth Branagh was so impressed by Winslet, that he offered her the part of Ophelia in Hamlet (1996). Carter had earlier played Ophelia in Franco Zeffirelli's Amleto (1990).
