Billie's relationship with Dillinger was not as grandiose as presented in the film. By the time of her arrest, they had only known each other for six months. In 1936, after being released from her two year incarceration, she received some money for a brief memoir, and then joined with members of Dillinger's family to tour the country with a presentation entitled "Crime Did Not Pay." She returned to her birthplace, the Menominee Reservation in Wisconsin and had two marriages, passing away in January of 1969.
