The film ran over budget, forcing Kevin Costner to make up the overages personally. That caused rumors that the film would be another out-of-control, disappointing western like I cancelli del cielo (1980). In fact, some studio people were referring to it as "Kevin's Gate", a mock title that was later given to Waterworld (1995). It went on to win the first Best Picture Oscar for a western since I pionieri del West (1931), almost 60 years before it.
