Director William Wellman joined the French Foreign Legion, becoming a fighter pilot on 3 December 1917, the first American to join Escadrille N.87 in the Lafayette Flying Corps (not Lafayette Escadrille, flying Nieuport 17s and 24s. He put his experience to good use directing "Wings," which won the first Academy Award, for "Outstanding Picture" on 16 May 1929.
