George Kennedy, who played Gregory, knew about combat in real life. He served in the US Army in World War II, attaining the rank of captain and being awarded two Bronze Stars for bravery while serving under Gen. George S. Patton. Kennedy later played Patton in Obiettivo Brass (1978).
