The film was acclaimed by Japanese critics, with many of them having high hopes for the film to find box office success in the west. When it was released it did become the highest grossing Japanese film at the US box office, but it only earned a total of $200,000 over a period of two years. Critics in Japan were heartbroken that, despite all the praise and acclaim the film had received it wasn't the box office success they had hoped for. Rashômon would go on to hold the record for the most successful Japanese film at the US box office until the release of a certain giant monster film later that decade.
