In the comics, Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four is the one who discovered that the black and white Spider-Man costume is an alien symbiote. However, because movie rights to the "Fantastic Four" characters were owned by 20th Century Fox at the time, it was changed to Dr. Curt Connors making the discovery.
