Halle Berry's 1973 character Luisa Rey has prominent similarities to the real-life story of Karen Silkwood, who was developing an expose of health and safety violations at nuclear power plants in in 1974 when her car was forced off the road on the way to a meeting with a New York Times reporter. Silkwood was killed and a large binder of evidence that she was delivering to the meeting disappeared; her murder remains unsolved.
