The story in American Graffiti is said to have taken place in September of 1962 just before school starts. In 1962, Labor Day was on Monday September 3, so school would have presumably started the next day or very soon after. That being the case, and since the story appears to take place on a Saturday night, the actual date of the story would have been September 1, 1962.
