The same night Sally Field won an Academy Award for her leading performance in this film was the same night Melvyn Douglas won an Oscar for his supporting performance in Hal Ashby's film Being There (1979). 17 years prior, Douglas had won an Oscar in the same category for his performance in Hud (1963), which, like this film, was directed by Martin Ritt. Taking things a step further, Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep would collect Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress Oscars that same night for Kramer Vs. Kramer (1979), directed by Robert Benton, who also took home Academy Awards for Director and Adapted Screenplay. 5 years later, it was Benton that would direct Field to another Best Actress Oscar, this time for Places In the Heart (1984), for which Benton also took home another writing Oscar- this time it was for his Original Screenplay. Also worth noting was that Field was on hand to receive her Oscar, whereas Douglas was not - he feared winning the award over a child actor who was nominated alongside him - KvK's Justin Henry- and thereby upstaging him. Making further note of this somewhat small world, one of the presenters who would award Benton the Best Director Oscar for KvK was Steven Spielberg, who would later direct Field to a Best Supporting Actress nomination- and the only one she did not win- for Lincoln (2012).
