Philip St. John Basil Rathbone (1892-1967) played Sherlock Holmes in the motion picture series between 1939 to 1946 including Il mastino dei Baskerville (1939) and Le avventure di Sherlock Holmes (1939). The success of which led to Rathbone being typecast and forcing him to end his employment at MGM and briefly return to Broadway.
