The film establishes that Vicki Vale has worked as a photojournalist and war correspondent, having covered the "Corto Maltese Revolution". Corto Maltese is the setting of a fictional revolution in the comic book mini-series "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" (1986) by Frank Miller. In the series', Superman's attempts to subdue the rebels (on behalf of the U.S. government), instead cause the Soviet Union to directly attack the United States. The name of the location is a reference to the Italian comic book character Corto Maltese, who starred in his own series of graphic novels from 1967 to 1989. The character is a globetrotter from Malta, who gets involved in multiple wars and revolutions during the first three decades of the 20th century.
